Sports Day and Shine Week

This week we had a really successful sports day with all the children taking part and being really good sports. Here you can see a few photos from our practise:

Healthy Week

Owls had a fantastic time in healthy week learning about all the different ways they could keep fit and healthy. Lots of children have sent back their questionnaires telling me about the things they loved most and what new things they'd like to try next year. Homework

This weekend we gave the Owls and the Wrens voluntary homework. They will only bring home the worksheets if they have asked for them. There is no deadline for bringing the homework back, just hand it to the class teacher when it is complete.

This week our homework was:-

Literacy: Rhyming game
Numeracy; Ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd.)
P.E Throw a ball in the air, clap your hands before you catch it. Next time try clapping twice. How many claps can you do before catching the ball?

Pennywell Farm

The Owls class had a wonderful time at Pennywell Farm this week learning about different animals and their environments. They were allowed to touch and cuddle the animals although they weren't very keen on the piglets - they screeched very loudly and frightened us all, including me! The children had the opportunity to see a puppet show about Chicken Licken, prepare and feed the goats (who were very hungry), go on a train ride, and feed the deer. They also enjoyed their lunch and the play area and many of them said that we should have a play area at school like this. The children were complimented on their behaviour and one parent of a toddler praised one of our children for being kind and helpful when it was time to get out of the train. An ideal place to visit in the holidays if you have not been and there were lots of activities the children did not have time to do. Enjoy the photos!

French Lessons

The Owls class have been learning to speak French every Wednesday with Madame Brooker. She has been teaching them words, songs and actions and even reading them The Very Hungry Caterpillar (in French). The children also answer the register in french and can say "Bonjour Madame - picnique ou dejeuner s'il vous plait." Please watch the video of one of our songs.

Mrs Woodward is going to China!

Mrs Woodward is going to China this month to visit the Jiaxing Quingan school in Jiaxing. She will be there for 4 days and will be able to find out all about how children in China are taught and to bring back good ideas for us to use.

She would love to take some things from our school to show them. The Owls will be coming up with a list of questions that they would like to find out the answers to.

We will be collecting some examples of our work to send with her but if anyone would like to draw a picture or write a letter to tell the children about things we do then have a go at home and bring it into school before 15th May.

Mini-beast Homework

The Owls and Wrens have been making mini-beasts at home out of different materials. They have used their imaginations to produce ladybirds, caterpillars, spiders and much more. Please come in and have a look and maybe you can get some ideas if you haven,t made one yet. They are on display in our play tray and the children can "show and tell" when they bring them in.

Plympton Dance Festival

14 children from the Owls class represented the school at the Plympton Dance Festival at the Ridgeway school before we broke up for our Easter holiday. Every school in Plympton was represented with ages ranging from 4 to 16. We were the youngest there and we performed a Wake up and shake up "Cowboy" dance. The children looked great in their cowboy outfits and performed very well - even though several of them said they were scared,(including me since I was the only teacher having to dance as well!) The children also enjoyed and benfitted from watching the other dances. Many of the children enjoyed the street dancing and were eager to try it for themselves when we got back to school. I was very proud of every single child and their behaviour was commendable. Many of the other school commented on this. WELL DONE OWLS CLASS. I will try and put the videos of the dances on to the blog when we get back to school (Miss Riggs can help me!)

Class Assembly

This week the Owls have performed their learning about growth in humans, plants and animals to their parents in their Jack and the Beanstalk assembly. They performed confidently and enjoyed showing off what they had learned this term.

They surprised the grown-ups by telling them about metamorphosis a process which they have enjoyed observing first hand in the class room. We're hoping our chrysalis will open soon - Do you know what will come out?

Holiday!

One of the Owls has been on holiday to Weston-Super-Mare to see his grandparents. He took travelling elephant with him to lots of places and thought he would like to share his photos with you!

Playtray

Owls class created their own playtray related to our topic on growth. After visiting the school pond and finding out about tadpoles and frogs we used our creative time to make lots of different things including frogspawn, frogs, leaves and lillypads.

Owls at Play

Owls class are keeping fit and healthy by using the playground and the equipment. They are keen to learn to skip so keep practising at home!

Learning Together

Owls and Wrens enjoy different learning activities and time to learn together in each classrooms and outside areas. This time gives the children the opportunity to socialise and collaborate with their friends in the other class.

Light and the sun.

This week we have been learning all about light and thinking about how we get light from the sun.
We've talked about all the things we know about the sun, we've investigated ights from the past - finding out how roman candles, lanterns and torches work and we also made lots of pictures of day and night as well as pictures of the sun. In ICT we made moving pictures of the sun. Would you like to see them?

Foundation Christmas Performance

The Owls and Wrens class have been busy practising for their performance next week. Don't they look great in their costumes!

Healthy Foods

This week we have been thinking about the food we eat. Which foods are healthy and help us to grow? We know that it okay to eat some foods that aren't healthy as long as we only have a little of them. Samba workshop

Today we had a Samba music workshop as part of our international week. We learnt how to play some Brazilian Reggae Samba rhythms and pulses. We used lots of instruments including hakka hakkas (maracas), agogos (two tone percussion), claves and lollypop drums. The Owls and the Wrens were brilliant at copying and playing the rhythms using words to help. We had lots of fun, here are some pictures of our music day.

Harvest food

We have been using the playdough to make harvest food. Can you see what we has made? this week we are making fruit kebabs using playdough and real fruit (not together though). We are learning to count 10 objects accurately by putting 10 fruits on the stick.

Autumn time

Owls class have been out and about this term to see the changes in the local area. We have been collecting leaves, nuts, pine cones and acorns to use in our play tray and we have used magnifying glasses to study the lines and patterns to draw and display our work. The children will be planting some seeds in our play area garden ready for next Spring! Curtis, Abbi and Evie had fun with the magnifiers.

Owls class Festival of Sukkot

As part of our R.E curriculum, the Owl's class were learning about the Jewish festival of Sukkot which is celebrated at this time of year. It celebrates the Story in the bible of Moses leading the Jews out of Egypt across the Red Sea and into the wilderness. They would make shelters to protect themselves from the elements and God would send down food from heaven for them to eat. Jewish people remember this journey by making shelters in their gardens or in their homes and decorate them with leaves and other natural items. They then eat their meals in the Sukkah for the week of the celebration.
